Celebration Deaths: Disney Town Sees Second Death This Week

CELEBRATION, Fla. — The owner of a failed security business barricaded himself in his soon-to-be foreclosed home, shot at deputies and then killed himself in this well-groomed Central Florida town built by Disney.

The 14-hour standoff came just days after the town's first-ever homicide, unsettling residents who moved to the community for its safety and small-town values even though authorities said the two were not connected.
Craig Foushee, 52, barricaded himself in his home Thursday for more than 14 hours, according to an Osceola County Sheriff's Office report. He shot at deputies several times, but they never returned fire because they couldn't get a clear shot. No deputies were injured.
Court records show Foushee was in the middle of a divorce, and it was apparent that his life was unraveling, neighbors said.
Early Friday, deputies deployed tear gas, entered the home and found Foushee dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
On the unusually crisp winter morning, the smell of the tear gas hung in the air on the upscale cul-de-sac. All of the second floor windows – including the third-floor dormers – were either broken or had bullet holes the size of baseballs. At least one streetlight in the shape of a lantern appeared to have been shattered by gunfire.
Just because this is Celebration doesn't mean everyone's perfect," said Eva Medved, who lived across the street from Foushee. "People die, people get divorced, people get in trouble."
Medved, who warned her two children not to get too close to the house for fear the lingering gas would harm them, said all of the neighborhood kids, including Foushee's children, played in the street and on everyone's porches.

Suicide rocks Disney-inspired town of Celebration, Florida days after town's 1st murder reported

Less than two days after the first-ever homicide shocked the town of Celebration, Fla., a man committed suicide in the Disney-built town.
On Thursday, Celebration resident Craig Foushee barricaded himself in his home for more than 14 hours, and fired on police. They never returned fire because they couldn't get a clear shot.
After 14 hours, cops deployed tear gas and entered Foushee's well-groomed home only to find him dead of a self-inflicted gun wound.
According to his Facebook page, he is survived by three daughters. He also said on the page that he worked as a pilot for American Airlines beginning in 1989 and began the Reliant Protection Group in 2006.
Court records show Foushee's life had taken a few tough turns over the past few months. His security business failed and he was going through a divorce. But neighbors in the colorful Disney-inspired town said there was no sign he was that troubled - at least on the outside.
"Just because this is Celebration doesn't mean everyone's perfect," said Eva Medved, who lived across the street from Foushee. "People die, people get divorced, people get in trouble."
The death comes only hours after the town, which is 5 miles south of Walt Disney World, was rattled by it's first-ever murder. Cops discovered Matteo Giovanditto's body on Tuesday after worried neighbors said they hadn't seen him for days.
"I've always thought of Celebration as a very safe community," Heather Hardy told reporters as the town of 11,000 tried to shake off the shock.

Town That Disney Built Has 1st Killing Since Start

Celebration, Disney's master-planned, picture-perfect central Florida community, has never reported a homicide in its 14-year existence — until this week.

Residents of the town five miles south of Walt Disney World woke up Tuesday to the sight of yellow crime-scene tape wrapped around a condo near the Christmas-decorated downtown, where Bing Crosby croons from speakers hidden in the foliage. A 58-year-old neighbor who lived alone with his Chihuahua had been slain over the long Thanksgiving weekend, Osceola County sheriff's deputies said.

The community's famous friendliness is what brought investigators Matteo Giovanditto's body: Neighbors hadn't seen the victim for days, so they filed a missing person's report, then went into his condo a day later and found him.

A few years ago, a resident joked with a reporter that Celebration would feel like real town when a bike was stolen. Now, it has an unsolved killing on its hands.
With 11,000 residents, Celebration is something of anomaly in Central Florida. There's no suburban sprawl — the entire place is reminiscent of a quaint New England village. It's the kind of town where people give Christmas gifts to their favorite Starbucks barista, where welcoming wooden rocking chairs sit lakeside on a sidewalk without being stolen, where neighbors tend to get suspicious if they notice you're not around. And that's what happened with Giovanditto, detectives say.Neighbors hadn't seen Giovanditto, who owned a bottom-floor condo at a building called The Idlewyld, since the day before Thanksgiving. His black Corvette was also missing. A neighbor was supposed to walk Giovanditto's dog, Lucy, over the weekend, but he wasn't responding to her calls.
