GLENDALE, Ariz. — At 5-9 and 215 pounds, Michael Dyer is, as one teammate described, "a rolling ball of thunder."
Light-ning comes with thunder. Every time.
There was a lightning strike from the rolling ball of thunder at University of Phoenix Stadium on Monday night. And with it, Dyer, who broke Bo Jackson's freshman rushing record at Auburn this season, did something the legend never could: He delivered a national championship for the Tigers.
In an exciting contest that was decided on the game's final play, top-ranked Auburn squeezed No. 2 Oregon 22-19 to claim the school's first national title since 1957.
The sellout crowd of 78,603 - with an estimated 20,000 more gathered outside the stadium to watch on a big screen - didn't get what most expected, but it witnessed a host of huge plays. None bigger than Dyer's dramatic burst with two minutes remaining.
With Auburn 75 yards from the end zone with two minutes, 27 seconds left, most had to assume Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton would make the play to decide the contest.
