Pearl Harbor Day 2010: Remembering December 7, 1941

Today, December 7, 2010 is Pearl Harbor Day 2010 as we celebrate the 69th anniversary of the attack of Pearl Harbor which happened on December 7, 1941. The date was described by then US President Franklin Roosevelt as the “date which will live in infamy”.Based on facts, on Sunday morning of December 7, 1941, Hawaii was attacked by the Imperial Japanese which caused 2,400 people to lose their lives and more than 1,100 were injured. The surprise Hawaii attack caused the sinking of four U.S. Navy battleships. After that, the next day, the United States declared a war against Japan which prompted the start of the World War II.The film “Pearl Harbor” by Jerry Bruckheimer which was released last 2001 supposedly depicts what really happened on that day December 7, 1941. However, several critics have identified inaccuracies on the film. National Geographic Channel produced a documentary called “Beyond the Movie: Pearl Harbor” which covers some of the ways that “the film’s final cut didn’t reflect all the attacks’ facts, or represent them all accurately.” Moreover, the greatest criticism came when actual historical events were changed for dramatic purposes to enhance the film such as that of Admiral Kimmel’s location.Today, able Pearl Harbor survivors, the youngest of whom are in their 80s, are expected to travel to several Pearl Harbor Memorials. The most famous among Pearl Harbor memorials is the USS Arizona memorial in Pearl Harbor in Oahu, Honolulu, Hawaii made up of marble over the sunken battleship USS Arizona which was dedicated in 1962. It is actually in the homepage of Bing right now in commemoration of the 69th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. Another Pearl Harbor Memorial is that of the USS Utah, another battleship that sank.Let us not forget the heroes and survivors of Pearl Harbor as we celebrate Pearl Harbor Day today.
