Arguing the move would diminish the district’s reputation and hurt students in the future, several parents Tuesday night asked the Central Bucks School Board to back off plans to eliminate the German language program for middle schoolers.
“Do we want to become the lowest common denominator compared to other area school districts?” asked Sue Bivett, the first of nine speakers to address the board about the plan. “If you take this away, we will no longer be considered an outstanding district.”
In December, as part of budget preparations, the administration floated the idea of offering German only at the high school level. The district has about 290 students enrolled in German classes throughout the district, according to Superintendent Dr. Robert Laws, and six full-time German teachers, some of whom work at more than one school.
